Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation Portuguese

Complete the full pathway to build your confidence and grow your mastery. If you are an absolute beginner, start with Foundation and progress at your own pace. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster for every course.

Nine hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the Portuguese language to creating your own sentences.
Listen as two students with no previous knowledge of the language are guided through the foundations of the language and join in as the third student in the class. Pause and respond when prompted to start to put your speaking skills into practice. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and the teacher’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.
This course is taught by Virginia Catmur according to the principles of the Michel Thomas method. Virginia Catmur grew up in a multilingual environment, and used her language skills working as a freelancer for various publishers. In early 2002 she met Michel Thomas while working for Hodder & Stoughton as a language editor – working alongside Michel in the studio, she edited his courses, and then managed the roll-out of the ‘post-Michel’ languages, commissioning and training other teachers who were similarly convinced by his Method.

Portuguese has around 250 million speakers, around 200 million of which are based in Brazil. An official language of Brazil, Portuguese is the official language of 9 other countries too including Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Portugal – including the Azores and Madeira, a group of 4 islands off the northwest coast of Morocco. Portuguese is also a co-official language in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau, or the “Las Vegas of the East” as it is popularly known.
Due to its wide geographical spread there are many variants of Portuguese. Its diversity also means it has a rich literary and artistic heritage, such as the renowned poetic works of Luis de Camões and the world famous Fado music of Amália Rodrigues.
The Michel Thomas courses teach European Portuguese, however the language is generally understood across all variants and dialects thanks to its overarching characteristics, for example the nasal pronunciation of the vowels ã and õ. Portuguese is part of the Romance language family and is most closely related to Spanish, Galician and Catalan.
