Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation Modern Standard Arabic

The Foundation course is perfect for absolute beginners, or those looking to refresh their knowledge. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster.
The version taught here is Modern Standard Arabic. If you are looking for Egyptian Arabic, please see our Egyptian Arabic courses here.

Eleven hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the Arabic language to creating your own sentences.
Listen as two students with no previous knowledge of the language are guided through the foundations of the language and join in as the third student in Michel’s class. Pause and respond when prompted to start to put your speaking skills into practice. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and the teacher’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.
This course is taught by Mahmoud Gaafar and Jane Wightwick according to the principles of the Michel Thomas method. Mahmoud Gaafar is a native Arabic speaker born and brought up in Egypt. By profession, he is a crafter of words and has worked for a variety of Pan-Arab organizations. Jane Wightwick is a graduate of Arabic. She is also a qualified language teacher and editor.

Arabic is spoken by over 200 million people in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East. In several other countries it is an official, albeit not universally spoken, language. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is an instrument of communication between all Arabic speakers. Arabic-speaking children learn the rules of MSA at school and can therefore use it to be understood anywhere in the Arab World. Learning MSA will help you to be understood if you travel to an Arabic-speaking country. Spoken dialects vary considerably from one Arab country to the next, but the Michel Thomas Method MSA will act as a passport to the culture and spirit of the Arab World.
