Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation Japanese

Complete the full pathway to build your confidence and grow your mastery. If you are an absolute beginner, start with Foundation and progress at your own pace. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster for every course.

Ten hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the Japanese language to creating your own sentences.
Listen as two students with no previous knowledge of the language are guided through the foundations of the language and join in as the third student in the class. Pause and respond when prompted to start to put your speaking skills into practice. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and the teacher’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.
This course is taught by Helen Gilhooly and Niamh Kelly. Helen Gilhooly worked for 25 years as a Japanese teacher and languages director in secondary education, and for 10 years as a teacher trainer at Nottingham University. She continues to write Japanese language teaching materials and to audio-edit Michel Thomas language courses. Niamh Kelly is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics in Dublin City University, where she has taught Japanese language and translation for over 20 years. She has lived and worked in Japan.

Designed for anyone with a basic understanding of Japanese, or anyone who has already completed Michel Thomas Foundation Japanese, this six-hour audio lesson will improve your conversational Japanese as well as your command of grammar and vocabulary.
Listen to a recorded lesson with a teacher and two language learners. You join in as the third learner. The courses are unscripted: you will hear the students’ progression in the studio from a basic grasp of Japanese to confident speakers, and you will learn from their successes and their mistakes.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
– Make plans with Japanese friends using the future tense
– Practice talking about your travel experiences using the past tense
– Express your opinions about everyday topics and give explanations

Japanese is spoken by 126 million people both in Japan and around the world, especially in North and South America. It is the second language of older Chinese and Korean people who either live in Japan or had to learn Japanese. It is the fifth most popular foreign language in the USA as well as being a popular non-European language in secondary schools in the UK.
Even if you have never studied Japanese before, because of the huge economic and cultural influence Japan has had worldwide, you will almost certainly be already familiar with some Japanese words, such as karaoke, origami, sushi and manga.
