Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation Hindi

The Foundation course is perfect for absolute beginners, or those looking to refresh their knowledge. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster.

Eleven hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the Hindi language to creating your own sentences.
Listen as two students with no previous knowledge of the language are guided through the foundations of the language and join in as the third student in the class. Pause and respond when prompted to start to put your speaking skills into practice. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and the teacher’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.
This course is taught by Akshay Bakaya according to the principles of the Michel Thomas method. Akshay Bakaya has lived in Paris since 1984 and has taught languages – Hindi, English, and French – at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, Sciences Po, Paris, the French foreign office and the International School of Paris.

There are around 425 million native speakers of Hindi, with 120 million speaking it as a second language. It is spoken in much of north and central India, and there is a significant number of Hindi speakers in other parts of the world including in South Africa, Fiji and Nepal.
Hindi is not as hard to learn as you might think – you’ll find many familiar words in English which are either Hindi or of Hindi origin, such as ‘jungle’, ‘bungalow’ and ‘pyjama’, while the Hindi language itself also uses lots of English words and phrases which it is very natural to hear native Hindi speakers intersperse throughout their conversations.
