Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation Greek

Complete the full pathway to build your confidence and grow your mastery. If you are an absolute beginner, start with Foundation and progress at your own pace. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster for every course.

Ten hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the Greek language to creating your own sentences.
Listen as two students with no previous knowledge of the language are guided through the foundations of the language and join in as the third student in the class. Pause and respond when prompted to start to put your speaking skills into practice. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and the teacher’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.
This course is taught by Hara Garoufalia-Middle and Howard Middle according to the principles of the Michel Thomas method. Hara Garoufalia-Middle was born in Athens, Greece. She taught English in Athens before co-founding her own school. Hara also taught both English and Modern Greek in the UK, and is the author, with her husband Howard, of self-study books and CDs for Greek. Howard Middle worked in Foreign Language publishing for many years before becoming an EFL consultant, including setting up a network of language school partners in Greece to administer ESL examinations. He is the co-author with Hara of all their published Greek materials, including the Michel Thomas courses.

With more than 4,000 years of development and history, Greek is one of the oldest Indo-European languages, rooted in a deep and rich cultural heritage.
Today, the Greek language is spoken by more than 10 million people in Greece alone, and around 4 million people elsewhere in the world. Australia, Canada, the USA, and South Africa still have the largest Greek-speaking populations outside Greece.
There are a large number of English loanwords in Greek such as complex, stress and telephone (tele meaning ‘far’ and phone meaning sound/voice in Greek). Many sports are also identical in both languages, for instance tennis and volleyball. Not only that, but due to their proximity and longstanding links there are also a great many Italian loanwords in Modern Greek including valíia (Greek) – valigia (Italian), meaning ‘suitcase’, and bigiétos (Greek) – biglietto (Italian) meaning ‘ticket’.
