Listen to a two-minute excerpt from Foundation German

Complete the full pathway to build your confidence and grow your mastery. If you are an absolute beginner, start with Foundation and progress at your own pace. A free, no obligation 20-minute lesson is available as a taster for every course.

Nine hours of structured learning takes you from the basic building blocks of the German language to creating your own sentences.
German is one of our original courses, taught by Michel Thomas himself. Listen as he teaches two students with no previous knowledge of the language and join in as the third student in Michel’s class, pausing and responding when prompted. The courses are unscripted: you hear the students’ real progression from absolute beginners to confident speakers – including their mistakes and Michel’s corrections. You’ll learn in small, manageable steps, building your ability to produce ever more complicated sentences.
You will start with common words and loan words, giving you a substantial starting vocabulary within your first hours of learning. By the end of the course, you will be confidently formulating sentences in the present, future and past tenses.

With themed sessions on travel, dining, socialising and daily life, you’ll pick up tips to help your German feel and sound natural. The course covers the key everyday vocabulary. By the end of the two hours you will be able to express your opinions with ease, ask for and give directions and talk about future plans.

German is spoken as a native language by around 105 million people and around a further 80 million people speak it as a second or foreign language.
The standard language is called Hochdeutsch and this is the language taught in schools. But there are also many regional German variants, especially in Southern Germany, such as in the beautiful Bavaria region where you can visit the Neuschwanstein castle and see stunning mountain scenery. German is also spoken in Austria and Switzerland, as well as northern Italy and parts of Belgium and Liechtenstein.
German has considerable importance within the EU, not only because of the number of speakers and size of the German economy, but also because it is, along with French and English, one of the three procedural languages of the European Commission. German is therefore hugely significant on the global scene.
